Quick Answer: No for remote access and browsers that no longer support plugins.
Your recorder requires a browser plugin that modern web browsers no longer support. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari removed plugin support several years ago, so the recorder’s web interface cannot display video anymore. In addition, Swann Security camera feeds cannot be viewed via any publicly accessed Swann website.
If you are trying to access your recorder
from outside your home network using a web browser, your public IP address and port forwarding are required. However, opening ports makes your network more vulnerable. This is why many manufacturers – have shifted away from browser‑based
port‑forwarded access.
You can still access your cameras using the Swann Security mobile app or the desktop software.
✅ Why this happens
Modern web browsers no longer support NPAPI or ActiveX plugins, which older Swann recorders (DVR/NVR models) relied on for:
- Live video streaming
- Playback
- Camera configuration
Browsers that removed plugin support include:
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Apple Safari
This means the web interface cannot load the video plugin anymore, even though the recorder itself still works.
✅ What you should do instead
For security reasons, modern systems—including Swann—recommend using the Swann Security mobile app or our desktop software instead of direct access via web browser. These methods offer secure, encrypted access without exposing your devices to the internet.
1. Use the Swann Security App (recommended)
Access live view, playback, and settings via:
-
iOS App Store → Swann Security
-
Google Play Store → Swann Security
2. Use Swann desktop software (Windows/Mac)
Access Live View and Playback via the software that is compatible with your recorder:
These do NOT require a web browser, so the missing plugin is no longer an issue.
If you want to view your recorder's live view via Microsoft Edge
If you choose to access your recorder through a web browser, you may be able to use Internet Explorer Mode in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11 when connecting via the recorder’s local IP address only. However, this method is not compatible if your recorder is an ADVANX model, and Swann Support does not provide assistance nor support documents for configuring your router or computer network to enable browser-based access. For any browser, network, router, or computer configuration requirements, please contact a network specialist, router manufacturer or your computer’s OEM for guidance.
Note:
- ADVANX recorders do not have Live View or Playback via web browser.
- The Windows software for EliteX recorders allows configuration via local IP access in Microsoft Edge.
