This guide helps you resolve the “Unable to connect to the device automatically” error in the Swann Security app for Android when setting up a Swann standalone Wi-Fi camera.
This error usually appears for one of two reasons:
-
The camera isn’t in pairing mode, so it can’t broadcast its temporary Wi-Fi access point (AP).
-
Your Android device can’t connect to the camera’s Wi-Fi AP, preventing the app from passing your home Wi-Fi details to the camera.
Before You Start
- Make sure your camera is powered on.
- Ensure your Android phone has Wi-Fi and Location enabled.
- Confirm you’re using the latest version of the Swann Security app.

Main Fixes
Camera Is Not in Pairing Mode
To set the camera into Pairing Mode, follow the instructions in the Swann Security app—each camera model has a slightly different method.
Most models show one or both of the following when ready:
- Slow blinking blue LED
-
Voice prompt: “Ready for pairing.”
Why this helps? The camera must broadcast its temporary Wi-Fi access point (AP) so your Android device can connect and pass your Wi-Fi credentials.
Still not in Pairing Mode? – Factory reset the camera
Enter the model number of your camera in this article, and follow the instructions on how to factory reset it.
Why this helps? A reset forces the camera into pairing mode automatically on startup.
Is it now in Pairing Mode?
Android Phone Can’t Connect to the Camera’s AP
If Swann Security can't make the phone connect to the camera's AP, you need to manually do it from your phone's settings instead.
- Go to: Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi
- Look for a network named: Swann-SWIFI-xxxxxx (xxxxxx = last 6 characters of the camera’s MAC address)
- Tap on the Swann-SWIFI-xxxxxx network and allow Android to connect – You may see a warning like “No internet connection”—this is expected.
Why this helps? Your phone must connect to this network so the Swann app can send your home Wi-Fi information to the camera.
If you see Swann-SWIFI-000000, the camera is malfunctioning.
Why this matters: A “000000” AP means the device cannot read its MAC address and cannot be paired.
➡ The camera will need replacement.
Other Cases
Try Connecting Again with Location Services Enabled
Some Android versions require Location to be on for Wi-Fi scanning.
Why this helps? It ensures Android can detect all available Wi-Fi networks, including the camera’s AP.
Restart Your Android Device
A reboot clears stuck network processes that may block AP connections.
