This guide helps you troubleshoot when your Swann DVR or NVR is turned on, but you see nothing on your monitor—no loading screen, a "No Signal" error, or messages like "Video Mode Not Supported."

Before diving in, ensure:

  • The recorder is powered on (check the LED indicators).
  • Your monitor or TV is working (test it first with a different device ).
  • Cables (HDMI/VGA) are securely connected and not damaged.

NOTE: If the recorder doesn’t power on at all, freezes on the loading screen, or keeps restarting, follow this separate boot troubleshooting guide.

Choose Your Issue

No Image or “No Signal” on Screen

Situation: The recorder is powered on (LEDs are lit), but the screen stays black or shows “No Signal.” You didn't even see the Swann logo or loading screen appear on the screen.

Check Monitor Input

  • Press your monitor’s remote or buttons that can cycle through its different channel input (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, VGA, etc.).
  • In the image below, it is labeled Source while some has Input or HDMI

Why this helps: The display might be set to the wrong source.

Reconnect the Display Cable

  • Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI or VGA cable at both ends.
  • Look for signs of wear, bent pins, or damage.

Test a New Cable

  • Swap in a different known-working HDMI or VGA cable to rule out a bad cable.

Use a Different Port

  • If your recorder has both HDMI and VGA, switch to the other output and test.
  • If your TV or monitor has more than one video input channel, connect the cable to another video input port.

Use a Different Monitor or TV

  1. Connect your recorder to another screen that supports at least 1080p resolution.
  2. Ensure that the cable connection at both ends are secure and firm.
  3. Identify which video input port on the TV or monitor have you connected the recorder (e.g. HDMI 1)
  4. Switch your TV or monitor's video input channel to the correct one (as per the example above, switch to HDMI 1)
  5. Reboot the recorder and observe if you can now see at least the Swann loading screen.
    • Swann loading screen appeared – This means your monitor and recorder connection via HDMI cable is correct. There are three possible that might show after this screen
      • Switches to black screen, then shows the loading screen again – it might be a rebooting issue. To fix it, visit this article and follow the instructions carefully.
      • Stuck on loading screen – it is what we call freezing issue where possible cause of the problem is a faulty recorder or power adapter. Visit this section of the article to troubleshooting it.
      • Shows a blank screen or error message about resolution – the monitor can't support the resolution that the recorder has. You can proceed here to troubleshoot it
    • No Swann loading screen – If nothing works on multiple monitors and cables, consider a possible boot failure. Follow this article to troubleshoot it

Screen Shows “Video Mode Not Supported”, "Out of Range", or Goes Black After Logo

Situation: You see the Swann logo or loading screen, then the screen goes black or shows an “Out of Range” or “Video Mode Not Supported” error.

Cause: Resolution Mismatch

The recorder is booted up, but its video resolution doesn't match what your display can handle.

Fix: Connect to a Compatible Monitor

Use another monitor or TV that supports 1080p since most recorder's default resolution is 1920x1080.

  • If you can now see the display, you can proceed to the next step.
  • If you still see the same error, then the monitor still can't handle the recorder's resolution. Keep looking for a monitor until you get a display shown.

Change the Display Resolution

  1. Navigate to Main Menu to change the resolution.
  2. Select a lower resolution (e.g., 1280x720) that your main monitor supports.

You can find step-by-step resolution reset instructions for your specific model in the following articles:

Reconnect to Your Original Monitor

After applying changes, unplug the temporary monitor and reconnect your original one.

  • If you are still getting the error, then the resolution is still doesn't match. Repeat the previous steps until you find a resolution that matches your main display.

Extra Tips

  • Avoid long HDMI cables: Use cables under 12 feet to reduce signal loss.
  • Use direct connections: Skip adapters or splitters during testing.
  • No image after resolution change? → Try a different monitor again or repeat the resolution reset.
