How to Update Firmware on Your Swann Recorder (DVR, NVR, NVW, MaxRanger4K™)
This guide will walk you through updating the firmware on your Swann recorder—whether it’s a DVR, NVR, NVW, or MaxRanger4K™. Updating firmware ensures your recorder has the latest features, bug fixes, and security patches.
Find Your Model Number
Before anything else, you'll need your recorder’s model number.

Why this helps? Each recorder model has unique firmware. Using the wrong file may cause the update to fail.
Things to Prepare
- A USB flash drive (32GB or smaller) formatted in FAT32 (not an external hard drive)
- A monitor and mouse connected to your recorder
- Your recorder’s model number and current firmware version
- Do not turn off or disconnect your recorder, internet, or USB flash drive during the update.
- An internet connection for the recorder is not required for the update.

- Connect your recorder to a monitor and mouse.
- Go to Setup > System > Information
- Note your current Software version and Agent Version

- YES → No update needed.
- NO → Proceed to the next step.
Why this helps? If your recorder already has the latest version, updating again may fail—which is expected.
Download and Prepare the Firmware
NOTE: Some recorders need a Transition firmware if the current version can't update to the latest firmware. If your recorder's current Software version matches below (or even older), update the firmware using the file linked below:
- NVW-650 - AllSecure650 & NVW-800 - AllSecure600 / AllSecure4K - if it has V8.1.0-20220511 or older, download this Transition firmware file then update
- NVR8-8580 - if it has V7.1.0-20180723, download this Transition firmware file (part 1) then update. Once it has V7.1.0-20180724, download this Transition firmware file (part 2) then update
- NVR16-8580 - if it is older than V8.1.0-20190827, download this Transition firmware file (part 1) then update. Once it has V8.1.0.20190827, download this Transition firmware file (part 2) then update

- Save the firmware file to a USB flash drive (FAT32, 32GB or below).
- Insert the USB into your recorder.
- For DVR and NVR: Insert the USB flash drive into any available USB port.
- For NVW and MaxRanger4K™ systems:
- Plug the USB flash drive into the Mouse/Backup port
- Move your mouse to the Storage port
Why this matters? The correct USB port ensures the recorder can detect and read the firmware file properly.

Always use a dedicated flash drive for firmware updates to avoid errors.
Install the Firmware
On your recorder, go to Setup > Advanced > Maintain then click on
Select the firmware file from your USB flash drive.
Click
A confirmation window will appear—click again to begin.
The recorder will restart once the update is complete.
IMPORTANT:
- Do not turn off your recorder during the update.
- Do not remove the USB flash drive.
- Do not remove the backup battery (if applicable).
After reboot, return to Setup > System > Information
Verify the firmware version matches the latest release.
If the update did not apply, repeat the steps carefully or try a different USB flash drive.
