Why does deleting data not free up space on an external RAID connected to macOS?

When you delete files from an external drive on macOS, the files are moved to a hidden '.Trashes' folder on the drive rather than being immediately removed. You must empty the Trash in macOS while the drive is connected to permanently delete the files and reclaim the storage space.
