This guide helps you troubleshoot a Swann standalone camera that appears offline in the Swann Security app.

Standalone cameras connect wirelessly (Wi-Fi) and rely on:

  • A stable internet connection
  • Correct Wi-Fi settings
  • Proper app setup and account pairing

Things to Prepare

  • Be onsite where the camera and router are
  • Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi
  • Confirm your internet is working
  • Ensure your camera is powered on (charge it if battery-powered)

DO NOT UNPAIR! If your camera is already paired to your account, refrain from unpairing. Most users are having bigger issue when they do this step.

Possible Scenarios and Causes

Camera Suddenly Went Offline

Camera Must Be On

For AC-powered cameras:

  1. Make sure its power adapter is plugged in to an outlet.
  2. Check the cable connection to the camera if it is loose; reconnect if needed.

 

For battery-powered cameras:

  1. If there's no LED activity, charge it for few hours – the battery might've been emptied
  2. Turn on the camera – if it has physical switch, make sure it is switched on

Reboot the Camera and Router

  1. Restart the camera - unplug then re-plug if it is an AC-powered camera, or reboot it using its physical button.

    Why this helps? Restarting clears temporary glitches that may interrupt connectivity.
     
  2. Restart your internet router
    1. Turn off the router
    2. Wait 30 seconds
    3. Turn it back on

      Why this helps? Refreshes your network connection and resolves IP conflicts.

Update the Swann Security app

  1. Check for app update
    1. Go to App Store / Google Play
    2. Search "Swann Security"
    3. Tap "Update" (if available); otherwise, re-login your account

      Why this helps? Ensures compatibility with your camera and latest firmware.
       
  2. Re-login on Swann Security app - make sure you know your email and password before you proceed
    Skip this step if you have just installed the app.

Check on other mobile device

This step helps determine whether the issue is related to your mobile device (such as its settings or third-party applications like a VPN) or the internet connection it is using (4G/5G or Wi-Fi).

If another mobile device is able to successfully access the camera, it indicates that there is no issue with your Swann Security account or the camera itself.

Router or Internet Details Changed

If you changed any of these, your camera will disconnect:

  • Wi-Fi name (SSID)
  • Wi-Fi password
  • Internet provider (ISP)
  • Router hardware

 

Option A: Restore Old Wi-Fi Settings (Quick Fix)

  1. Log into your router settings
  2. Change Wi-Fi name and password back to the previous one

Why this helps? Your camera will reconnect automatically if it detects the same network.

 

Option B: Reconnect the Camera (Recommended)

  1. Open the Swann Security app
  2. Go to More then Pair Device
  3. Set the camera to pairing mode
  4. Follow the first-time setup process

Camera Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi During Setup

We have a recommended router Wi-Fi settings for seamless connection

  1. Make sure to connect it to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi – It is even better if your router has a dedicated IoT Wi-Fi network that only has 2.4 GHz; not a Wi-Fi with a single SSID that hold both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
  2. Security Protocol: WPA/WPA2 – If it is set to WPA3 only, the camera won't connect as this protocol is not backwards compatible
  3. Remove any special characters on your Wi-Fi name and password

If you have all of these set correctly on your router, but still not going online:

  • Restart your phone
  • Reset the camera and retry setup
  • Try a different smartphone
Weak Wi-Fi Signal or Intermittent Connection

NOTE: If the camera is currently offline, there are two possible scenarios and how to make it online:

If the camera is now online, check the signal strength of the camera

  1. In Swann Security app, go to More then select your camera.
  2. Check the Wi-Fi Signal strength - 80% or above is recommended; a stronger signal also decreases unwanted battery drain for battery-powered cameras.

 

How to Fix It?

Move the camera closer to the router or vice versa; there is no camera setting that can help boosting the signal

  • If moving them closer is not possible, consider using a Wi-Fi extender to expand the range of your Wi-Fi, giving better signal to your camera.

Why this helps? Weak signals are the most common cause of offline cameras.

Camera Went Offline After Update

A camera firmware update doesn't restore its settings to default; therefore, it should reconnect to your Wi-Fi once it is done.

 

If the app updated and you lost access, using another device, check if you can access your cameras.

List down the phone model, OS version, and app version

  • If the OS version and app version are the same with your previous phone, then something's wrong with it (either settings or network) that is causing the problem—no troubleshooting needed for the camera
  • If the app version is lower, but on the same OS (previous phone is Android, other phone is also Android), there is a chance that the new version has an issue (rare occassions)

Summary

If your standalone camera is offline, the most common causes are:

  • Temporary glitches → Restart devices
  • Wi-Fi changes → Reconnect or restore settings
  • Weak signal → Improve placement or network
