[SFP Transceiver] Can you use the same fiber cable for both single and multi mode transceivers?

NO, different cables support specific wavelengths so if you use a cable that cannot manage the SFP transceiver wavelength at both sides the system won't work correctly. So when installing your SFP transceivers you need to verify that each use the same fiber type and use the corresponding fiber cable.

  • Single-Mode Fiber (SMF)
They uses a narrow core configuration ( 9μm) and allows only a single mode of light to propagate. They are mainly used for long distances (2km~120km).

  • Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF)
It has a wider core than the SMF (50μm ~ 62.5μm) and allows multiple modes of light to propagate. They are mainly used for short distance transmissions (100m~500m max).

The cables are usually color coded to avoid confusion, please refer to the following cable to check what fiber type you are using
